I am just tickled that Moment Junkie featured
the photo above on their website! It is a photo that I took at Katie & Kevin’s wedding this past September
(which I still have to blog about). While uploading, I instantly had a smile because it reminded me of the movie Lord of the Rings.

Dear Grandma,
Oh how it seems like it was yesterday that I with you the very moment it was decided
that your duties with us here were finished. I can’t believe that it has been 5 years.
That very moment will forever feel like it just happened. I’ve thought about you all day
today, on and off, and at moments, becoming very teary eyed. In fact, I’m typing this,
with tears that are running down my cheeks, remembering what was happening at this very
moment 5 years ago at 9:30 pm. I’ve done quite a bit of remembering today- all happy
moments and memories. All the life lessons you taught me. So many, I would be writing for years straight.

One moment sticks in my head tonight. I think because every time I do this, I have to quietly
giggle to myself (I had no idea at the time I wold fully understand it). Everyday I think of this.
It was during that very, very long bus ride across the country going to Oregon. I think we were
in Montana, maybe Missoula, when the we had a bit of a layover in the middle of the night. We
were to get back on the same bus, it was late- or early depending on how early you got up. We
were exhausted, as we had been traveling forever it seemed. Our turn came to exit the bus and
you wanted your tiny travel bag, but could not reach it yourself. I asked you why (perhaps in my
tired, snotty 10 year old voice) why and you told me because you just needed to wash your face
because you felt yucky and dirty. Little did I know at that time what an impact that would have
on me during that trip and now as I am an adult. Such a simple thing to do that makes you feel
good. I will never, ever forget it. In fact, I can still close my eyes and imagine our exact
surroundings. Silly? Maybe. I have yet to wash my face and not remember those tiny words we
exchanged in the middle of the night. :)

Here it is, the end of May {WHOA}!

I’ve been busier then ever, and I have not had to do my favorite thing lately, blog.
I’ve got some pretty big changes happening this year {photography} and I am so excited
to see it unfold.

One thing that you may notice in the next few post is that I am really challenging myself.
I’m trying to get really creative with the way I see the world and the way I see light. I also
have slightly changed the way I process my images. I have a better definition of my style and
I am just loving it!

This is when life has kicked into high gear for me.
I’m hanging onto my hat, trying to rope the wind….

and loving every minute.

I knew about this at the end of 2010, but I was not able to talk about being voted the Knot best of until now. I can not begin to express my gratitude to everyone who voted for me. With another year over and a new year that has just begun, I wanted to share with you some exciting news and a few changes that I am making for the Year of 2011.

For starters, I would like to thank everyone whom left a review for me, spread the word about me, or have supported me through the years. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I wouldn’t have the courage to go where I am going to go tomorrow. I feel so blessed to be doing something that I love. Something that is my passion. Because of all of you, I was voted the best of weddings on the weddingchannel.com and theknot.com! I am so, so honored and it is all because you, my clients. I can not find a way to thank you enough (more on this in a few weeks)….

As most of you know, I am based in Minnesota, but will travel anywhere to photograph a beautiful couple. I know that there are many, many choices out there for photographers, but I really wanted to set myself apart that would take me from not only a Twin Cities photographer, but an international and destination photographer.

As part of my branding process, I decided that I really needed some beautiful material to send out to all potentional couples. Something unique, something eye catching, but most importantly, something that is true to whom I am and my style. Something that would help brides & grooms visualize themselves in my images. Showcasing some sample images while sharing a little about myself with my clients. These little packets are a labor of my love (which include handmade envelopes by me). I’ve been looking and looking for some really great marketing materials, but nothing was getting my attention. I gave my CS rep Nicole a call at ACI Lab and asked for her help and guidance. She got me pointed in the right direction, and I took it from there. I just ADORE Nicole, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE ACI.

This year is to be the best yet for me and includes some weddings with incredibly beautiful couples in gorgeous settings from Napa, CA to right down the road from me- promised with a crazy- fun display of fireworks and cigars. This summer will be excellent and I am just so excited for all my couples!
Here’s to 2011…

I have been filled with all kinds of emotion this week. I was going to write about Grandma, then I wasn’t, then I didn’t know if I could get through it. I feel like she was such an important part of my life for such a long time, that she did her part at making me the person I am today. I need to tell the world what kind of a person she was.

Caring. Compassionate. Full of love. Full of gratitude. Strong.

If I am only half the person she was, then I am happy. To my entire Family, she was the world to us. We miss her so much.

Wedding Day

We lost my Grandma 4 years ago this week, and even though she passed away on the 16th, it was a Friday (it would have been today) around 10:00 pm. We lost her to cancer. It makes me sad to this day to think about what she went through the last week, but at the same time, it warms my heart to know that she is now happy. I was with her when she passed. It was an experience that forever changed me. I was close to Grandma. To this day, I still find myself thinking that I have to ask Grandma or think to myself that I can’t wait to tell her something.

I grew up with her right next door to me. She was always in my life. When I was younger, she was always there. I saw her everyday. She was there when I crashed the 3 wheeler and needed 100 stitches in my knee (she was the one who drive me to the hospital). She was there when I fell off my pony and broke my arm. She was there for me when I was sick. I remember her kneeling on the side of the bed watching TV (The Golden Girls) and eating a bit of supper while I laid in her bed- sick with the flu. I remember her always baking and cooking lunch. For anyone who stopped over. She taught me how to bake pies. I still can’t quite make them like her, but I sure do like trying. Homemade crust. Rhubarb from her rhubarb patch.

She once entered a pie contest on a whim for the Northfield News, and she won! Here is the picture that was in the paper…

Fishing and walking down to the bridge. Sitting outside on her step in a chair or on the picnic table. Just talking. She was always there for me. She was with me in the only two tornadoes I have ever been in. She made me feel better when I fell down and she was always there to pick me up. She always had fresh garden flowers on her table. Her favorites were peonies. These were picked from her plants.


Grandma loved pretty sunsets. After the storms passed last night, they left us with this view. It put my mind and heart at peace just in knowing that she would have loved this view.

Grandma, I miss you in so many ways. You had a part in making me whom I am today. We will never forget you and we will always pass on your memories.

Really, I like blogging, and it seems like the last two weeks just flew by.

Lot’s of exciting things have happened since I posted my last entry. Not only have I been shooting, but I did something that made me feel really good- on the inside. It just really warms my heart and makes me smile. I just couldn’t wait to talk about this. In fact, it brings tears to my eyes. Not in a bad way, but because of all the emotion I feel for doing this. I was able to donate my talents for someone else. I feel like I may have made a difference. I heard about this benefit for Scott LeDoux (a Minnesota Boxer) on Friday night and I decided to donate a complete wedding package. Now Scott has a horrific disease, ALS. The package went to the highest bidder which included up to 8 hours of my time, an engagement e-session, custom built website, and a 9×12 art album. This is my passion, and I feel so good about the donation. Not only do I feel good about doing this, but I am able to give a couple beautiful wedding pictures.

Below, is a little information on ALS. I have not had anybody directly affected by this disease, but I have known a few families who have been affected. I took this right off of the website put together for Scott.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease, is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurons making even the simplest movements – walking, talking, gesturing, swallowing – nearly impossible. When motor neurons die, they can no longer send messages to the muscles. This breakdown in sending nerve impulses to the muscles is what causes the weakness in the disease.
To date, no one knows what causes the death of the motor neurons in ALS or exactly how it occurs.
ALS can occur from 20-80 years of age. The most common age of onset is mid-50′s. Approximately 30,000 people in the United States are living with the disease. It claims some 5,600 lives each year.
